MEANDERING THROUGH MEXICO

Buenas dias, mes amigos. (Or tardes or noches depending on what time of day or night you happen to be reading this.) This may be a somewhat disjointed post due to the fact that my system is going through several shocking developments.

The first shock occurred when I traveled from a locale of 95 degrees to a locale of -2 in less than 24 hours. Isn’t there a temperature sickness not unlike altitude sickness when the human body is subjected to such extreme extremes? The second shock is that Montezuma is having his way with me AFTER returning home, instead of while I was in Mexico. Which is fine with me, since I gained 5 pounds on this trip. Now I’ve only gained 2 pounds. I might maybe want just one more day of this shock.

I do have a few airport stories to tell…none of which concern knitting needles. The first is that Em and I arrived at the airport on February 1st, on time and raring to go, in spite of the winter storm that was quickly messing up streets and runways. I just couldn’t understand why the ticket agent at the Northwest counter kept saying my passport wasn’t valid. Um….it’s expired, lady!  My current passport was snuggly asleep at home.

The ticket agent turned out to be our savior. She promptly rebooked us on a new flight a half hour later, and my SO valiantly carted me back and forth once again to retrieve my legitimate passport. The snow was significantly worse than earlier so it took us significantly longer than expected to make the round trip. I arrived back at the airport where the now-heroic ticket agent went to bat for us to get the snippety gate agent to open the door to our plane and let us on.

This is why I like to fly out of my little hometown airport, even though it usually costs more than heading out from elsewhere. Had we flown from Detroit, there is no way I could have gone home to get my passport. We’d have been stuck till the next day. Had we flown from Detroit, I don’t think the ticket agent would volunteer to cart our luggage out to the runway herself if that’s what it took to get us on board. Three cheers please for Kristi W. at the NW counter at Capital City Airport in Lansing, Michigan!!

The second airport story is an old and sad story. I became an airport statistic for the first time when my bag didn’t show up in Detroit on Sunday for the customs check. Where did my bag go? I have no idea. But the naughty child finally showed up on my doorstep on Tuesday morning. Whew. If this had occurred on the way to Mexico, it would have been a downer of major proportions. Since it occurred on the way home, it was only a minor inconvenience. But being a statistic can be nerve-wracking while it’s happening, that’s for sure.

So I’ve told about the going and the coming home. What happened in between? That’s for the next post. But here’s a few hints:

This was my first trip to Mexico. I hope it's not my last. I loved it. For those of you shivering in the grip of winter...I hope these photos help warm you.

Knitting news.....none. Oh well.....mañana.

(Thanks to Chery for helping me figure out the ~ in mañana)

I love Mexico, too. Haven't been there in a long, long time though.

In Word to insert the ~ over the n:
Ctl+~,N will do it, or
Insert, Symbol, normal text: latin-1, 6th row, 9th character, highlight and click enter.

In Typepad, I dunno! Must be a HTML code to do it.

Ooh, I'm jealous. I'm tired of dressing in layers.

And I just KNEW you'd be sitting at an outdoor cafe, knitting in hand.

Welcome home!!!! We're throwing a snow party for you!

Welcome home! Sorry we didn't pick up before you arrived... and we forgot to turn the heat back on :-)

I love the photo with you and the flowered wall, then again the one on the beach makes me think of warmer days, ... and the photo of... oh, it all looks wonderful!

Oh wow... Your vaca looks like it was really fun. Mexico is a blast. I loved Chitanitza (I have no idea how to spell it anymore) Tell Emily I say hey:)

That looks so fun - I'd love to go back! I'm liking Cupid by the way.....

Mayan temples. Cool.

Welcome back to the Estados Unidos. I'm sure you wish you were back in Mexico.

Oh the passport incident must have been stressful. Glad to hear it all worked out and you had a great vacation. Welcome back to winter! ;)

Looks wonderful -- lucky you! You reminded me of my airport story--Christmas,2006---big snow in Denver!! Poor me stranded in Cancun!! Awwwww!!
:)

oh...the toes in the sand. You're a cruel woman, my friend. I'm gazing at the igloo in my front yard, and you have/had toes in the sand. Hope you're feeling better!
