The entrelac sweater has officially begun. Sarah had our brains spinning at Thursday night's class, trying to work the math as we figured out what our patterns would actually look like. For a while it felt like I was back in Mrs. Allen's 8th grade math class, working on story problems. My mind was a gluey mess as I gazed at numbers, while Sarah confidently expected that we would all just "get it." Sarah's confidence was well-placed. We all finally did. I went home with a reasonably clear sense of how many entrelac squares wide and tall my sweater would be. More importantly, I knew how many stitches to cast for my garter stitch border, and how many to decrease when I started the base triangle row.
Flash forward to home. Yesterday I cast on and did my border. So far so good. Tonight, I started working on base triangles. I have 24 of them to do. I got through the first five, while I watched Hollywood divas arrive at the Oscars. I should have paid much closer attention to the directions though. I had forgotten to knit the last back and forth row of each triangle, so I would have a slipped stitch in every row for picking up later. First major decision...I wrestled with my Inner Self.
Me: It's only 5 triangles. I'll do it right from here on. It won't matter. No one will ever know.
IS: How do you know it won't matter? It will throw off the gauge right from the start. Do it over.
Me: Well then, I'll do them all this way. I just won't have the slipped stitch for all seven stitches. When I pick up, it just will be a little harder. But no one will ever know. It's not a big deal.
IS: For goodness sake, it's only 5 measly triangles. Just do it over!
Me: (grumble grumble unprintable grumble) (mumble) Okay already.
IS: (sweetly) Thank you.
Where did this Inner Self come from? Me...the Queen of Shortcuts and Fudging Mistakes. What fortitude. See. Knitting is a good character builder.
The newly corrected five triangles were completed during Billy Crystal's opening act. I left the Oscars after Tim Robbins received his award for best supporting actor. I haven't seen Mystic River yet, although I read the book. I'd like to win an award someday. Let's see...what could I be nominated for?
Best Supporting Mom in a family sit-com
Best Director of a classroom full of hormonally challenged 8th graders
Best Behind-the-Scenes Organizer of a contradance weekend
Best Writer of an unfinished unpublished young adult novel
Best Thinker of Excuses not to practice a musical instrument
Yes, surely I could win one of these competitions. I'm going to go practice my acceptance speech. I leave you a picture of my miniscule progress. Someone on the FMB message board asked me if entrelac was hard. No....not if you actually read the directions.
